What is serendipity?
The unsought find. That's the essence of serendipity. Serendipity Labs (SL) is
all about the unsought musical find. The goal of this organisation is to stimulate synergy between
related creative minds and provide a virtual musical playground as well as a studio/rehearsal room to experiment.
Check out this link for nice examples of serendipity in the world of science.
What laboratory?
In the top secret underground lab there's enough space to experiment and all the facilities are inhouse to document the finds. Martijn Maas
and Warner Werkhoven are the main laborants and initiators who keep the operation up and running. Some of the frequent SL-visitors are Omski,
@rock's Bluntaxe Orchestra, VONK Trio, Space Warriors and Richard van Kruysdijk (Sonar Lodge, Amplified, Strange Attractor). The labs are situated at an undisclosed location within the premises of the (not so) Temporary Art Center
(TAC) in Eindhoven. This is an artists complex in the city centre of Eindhoven
that has offices, workshops, a stage and a whole bunch of creative people. More information on the Labs can be found
here.
F.A.Q. (frequently asked by ourselves)
Is Serendipity Labs, besides a lab, also a record label? No. It's more of a network of musicians based in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
Many of the musicians have played together in different projects or on different occassions. It's like jazz but without the jazz music.
What is characteristic of the musicians from this network? An (un)intended unawareness of what is hot in the general media. Also a DIY
attitude (Do It Yourself). Composition, performance, recording, design, management and promotion is largely done by themselves.
What is characteristic of the music from this network? Accessible but with a twist. Ranging from electropop through jazzrock to nu-jazz
with a hint of funkiness.
Who are Martijn Maas and Warner Werkhoven? The masterminds behind this madness, the modernday equivalent of the homo universalis,
combining practical creativity with stunning good looks.
